Chapter 7
Finnick
Loud banging on the door to my apartment had me grumbling and shuffling my feet to go answer it. Garth stood on the other side, bearing a tray of coffees and a bag from the coffee shop around the corner. He held them up and I let him inside.
“You look like shit, man,” he said once we were in the kitchen. He slid one of the paper cups to me, and I removed the lid to let the coffee cool. “Haven’t seen you since the graveyard. There are some rumors going around about you.”
“Yeah, and they’re probably all true.”
I hadn’t told anyone about being cursed, except the witches I went to for help. Figured they’d spread the news since they all despised me for how I’ve acted over the years. Since meeting Beckett, working with her—well, being yelled at by her, really—I saw how much of an ass I let myself become. How much I acted like Dion. It pissed me off, and I’d been fighting with myself the last few days to prove I wasn’t that bad of a guy.
I was failing that fight. I hardly slept, and the only time I didn’t feel like shit was when I was around Beckett. Listening to her talk—and man could she talk—helped remove me from my own problems. Listening to her rant while she worked fascinated me. Everything about that witch drew me in. Now I was left wondering if I was falling for her because of who she was or because that’s just what I did. I found witches, got what I wanted, and then left them in the dust.
Because love didn’t exist. I took a gulp of coffee without thinking and burned my tongue.
“Are you contemplating the meaning of the universe over there or what?” Garth asked. “Talk to me, Finnick. What’s going on with you?”
“I was cursed by Karina,” I said and set the coffee aside to run my hands through my messed-up hair. “Not much to tell after that. When I use my powers, I turn into a jackass.”
Garth didn’t laugh. My other so-called friends would’ve been rolling on the floor by now. Not Garth. Probably the only reason I liked him. “That’s a bit harsh, and what, because you didn’t love her back?”
“Something like that. I shouldn’t have laughed in her face when she said it, but a curse?”
“You sure she’s not after something else?”
I took one of the breakfast sandwiches he brought and unwrapped it. “What do you mean?” I asked in between bites.
“I mean she’s part of that damned Blood Coven or whatever. They’re into some dark shit. Always hated the gods. This curse, it’s not stealing your power somehow, is it?”
“Not that I know of.”
Beckett hadn’t said anything about my powers being sapped by the curse. She would’ve let me know by now, I think. Then again, Beckett wasn’t exactly the most powerful witch in the world. She was smart, though. How Harriet wasn’t proud of her daughter baffled me. Beckett created new plants in her loft.
